The Power of Fasting: A Spiritual Discipline

Spread the love

Introduction:
In Matthew 6:16-18 (KJV), Jesus speaks about fasting, saying, “Moreover, when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.”

Fasting Defined:
Fasting is a powerful spiritual discipline that involves abstaining from food or other indulgences for a specific period while focusing on prayer and seeking God’s presence. It is not meant to be a show for others but a private and sincere act of devotion.

Purpose of Fasting:

  1. Spiritual Discipline: Fasting is more than abstaining from food; it’s a discipline that strengthens our spiritual muscles. It helps us develop self-control and dependence on God.
  2. Humbling Ourselves: Fasting humbles us before God. When we deny ourselves physical nourishment, we recognize our dependence on God for sustenance, both physical and spiritual.
  3. Spiritual Clarity: By setting aside the demands of the flesh, we create space for spiritual clarity. Fasting can sharpen our focus on God’s voice and guidance in our lives.

Biblical Examples:

  1. Jesus: The ultimate example of fasting is Jesus Himself. In Matthew 4:2 (KJV), it is written, “And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.” Jesus fasted in preparation for His ministry and to overcome the temptations of the enemy.
  2. Daniel: In the book of Daniel, we see how fasting was a key part of his seeking God’s wisdom and understanding (Daniel 9:3, Daniel 10:2-3, KJV).

Promises of Fasting:
Isaiah 58:6-9 (KJV) provides insight into the promises of fasting:
“Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the Lord shall be thy rereward.”

Conclusion:
Fasting, when done with the right motives and a sincere heart, can be a transformative experience. As we deny ourselves physically, we open ourselves up to the spiritual nourishment that God provides. May we approach fasting with humility, seeking His face, and trusting in His promises.
